The Pomodoro Technique and its Use to Increase Productivity

Completing work tasks or daily routine is usually a constant challenge, especially when we do not have the motivation or desire to do so. We typically get up, having in mind all the work of the day. Still, at the time of execution, we do not find a way to maximize our productivity. However, this has been a phenomenon studied for a long time, and there are many techniques related to the productivity of the human being. One of those techniques is the Pomodoro Technique. If you had not heard it before, you are possibly asking yourself the following questions: What is the Pomodoro Technique? How can I use it? And is it suitable for all people? Next, we answer these questions in detail.

POMODORO TECHNIQUE

The Pomodoro Technique was created by the Italian Francesco Cirillo while studying at the university during the 80s. Since then, it is one of the most-used productivity techniques in the world. The method consists of dividing time lapses of work called pomodoros, so the person does not feel mentally tired. Cirillo named the method with this name based on a timer he used with the shape of a pomodoro. The word pomodoro means tomato in Italian.

WHAT IS THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE?

The process of carrying out the Pomodoro Technique is simple and consists of six easy steps:

  1. Make a list of the tasks you must complete according to the order of importance and choose the one you will start working.
  2. Set a timer to 25 minutes (it can be manual, or you can use a mobile application).
  3. Work on the selected task until the 25 minutes pass. During this period, it is essential to eliminate distractions and everything that prevents you from concentrating.
  4. At the end of the 25 minutes, take a short break of five minutes to clear the mind and focus better (this process is called the conclusion of a pomodoro).
  5. Repeat steps 1 to 4.
  6. At the end of four pomodoros, take a break of 20 to 30 minutes.

IS THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE FOR EVERYONE?

The Pomodoro Technique is useful for all those people who work with a list of tasks and who do not have problems with taking rest periods. Currently, this technique is used by students and professionals. People adjust it according to their needs. In some cases, people prefer to complete 30-minute work pomodoros, while others prefer to complete 15-minute pomodoros. The technique can be adjusted to achieve the best results it can provide. The important thing is to complete the stipulated tasks during the workday.
